About
Aikido & Us
While
the technical curriculum of aikido is derived from jujutsu,
swordsmanship, and spear art- the founder of aikido, Morihei
Ueshiba modified many of the destructive techniques in order
to cause the minimal amount of damage to an attacker. The
modification of “killing techniques” into “saving techniques”
is a direct result of Morihei Ueshiba’s spiritual enlightenment
in his later years. Proper execution of technique depends
on mastering correct posture, timing, breathing, and clarity
of mind. Besides its self defense aspect, Aikido offers a
practice to engage the mind/body connection which contributes
to a holistic lifestyle. Aikido is an internal or “soft” martial
art that is not reliant on physical superiority. Men, women
and children can be effective practitioners of the art. A
basic class includes stretching, breath work, movement, and
meditation. Work with the sword and staff are also practiced
at Potomac Aikikai. The normal minimum age to begin training
is around 6 and some aikidoka have been known to practice
past their 90’s
The
Chief Instructor of Potomac Aikikai is Asim Hanif. Hanif Sensei began
studying aikido in 1995. He is presently ranked Nidan and is
certified by Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Japan. He was first introduced to aikido by Irv Faust Sensei (Albany Aikido). After moving to Virginia in 1996 he became a member of Capital Aikikai under the direction of Clyde Takeguchi Shihan. He has also been priviledged to receive instruction from
many other high ranking Sensei.
Hanif Sensei began martial arts training in 1972, primarily in judo and
karate. He later earned Nidan in Okinawan karate and
won 2 professional titles in kickboxing. In 1991 Hanif Sensei met Michael Robinson Shihan and was heavily influenced by his instruction and knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, tai chi/chi gong, and TCM.
In addition to pursuing aikido, he
has trained and managed professional boxers since 1990.
Hanif Sensei is now a full time professional instructor.
